We are a family owned and operated 90-acre vineyard nestled on the west bench of Alexander Valley. With a fertile history dating back generations, the property has been home to a stage coach stop along the Old Redwood Highway to prune plums in the early 20th century to modern, certified sustainable winegrape growing. The Stone Ranch embraces a holistic approach to viticulture, ensuring that our vineyards thrive while preserving the natural beauty of our corner of Alexander Valley. Our unique micro-climate enhances the depth and complexity of flavor. The vines recover well even in the heat of summer due to cool nights influenced by the nearby Russian River. The vines work hard to acquire nutrients in the gravelly soil left behind by ancient floods and the decomposition of ancient seabeds. The steep hills shade our westerly most vineyards in the afternoon. The whole vineyard receives the first rays of gentle morning light as the sun rises over Mt. St. Helena.

Our
VARIETIES

  • CABERNET SAUVIGNON

The flagship variety of The Stone Ranch and Alexander Valley. We grow mostly Clone 7 on Schwarzmann rootstock. The ancient gravel beds produce ideal soil conditions limiting yields to 2-5 tons per acre resulting in significantly concentrated flavors.

  • Zinfandel

20 acres of old vine head trained, spur pruned Zinfandel in our east side blocks produce flavorful grapes year after year. The blocks were planted in 1965 and 1980. In 2024 we will replace some of the older vines with clone 41 Zinfandel on St. George rootstock.

  • Petite Sirah

Our Petite Sirah is our sleeper variety, we sell it for blending with other varieties to give them structure and color. A highly underrated variety that thrives in our tough soil conditions.

  • Chardonnay

5 acres planted to a new 6 wire sprawl trellis system that emphasizes the power of photosynthesis to bring out the ripeness and tropical fruit flavors.

  • Cabernet Franc

One of our higher elevation blocks, 5 acres of Cabernet Franc planted in 2020 on 1103P rootstock. The roots push through 2.5 feet of gravelly loam into a layer of clay. The large canopies produced by the vigor of 1103P spread out nicely on our 6 wire sprawl trellis system. Often above the frost line and fog line, this block experiences early bud break and extended hangtime deep into autumn.

  • Malbec and Petit Verdot

Planted in 2023, these 0.6 and 0.3 acre blocks will provide fruit for our family wine label, Lampson Family Wines. The first vintage will be in 2025.
